Daniel Goleman first brought the term ’emotional intelligence’ to a wide audience when he published a book of the same name. He was also the first person to apply the concept to business. Goleman researched nearly 200 large global companies, and found that while the qualities traditionally associated with leadership (such as toughness, determination, vision) are needed for success, they are not enough. The best leaders also exhibit a high level of emotional intelligence – traits which include empathy, motivation and social skill.
